Addressing this crucial question, researchers from MIT and the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab have introduced an innovative automated system designed to teach users when to collaborate with an AI assistant.

The key to this groundbreaking approach lies in a personalized onboarding process. Imagine a scenario where a radiologist unintentionally places trust in an AI model that is, in fact, incorrect. The system developed by the researchers automatically identifies such situations and learns rules for effective collaboration, expressing them in natural language.

During the onboarding phase, the radiologist engages in collaborative training exercises based on these rules, receiving real-time feedback on both her performance and the AI’s accuracy. Results indicate a noteworthy 5 percent enhancement in accuracy when humans and AI collaborate on image prediction tasks using this onboarding method. Strikingly, merely instructing users when to trust the AI, without proper training, resulted in decreased performance.

What sets this system apart is its full automation, allowing it to adapt to various tasks. This versatility positions it for application in diverse collaborative settings, such as social media content moderation, writing, and programming.

Hussein Mozannar, lead author of the research paper and a graduate student in the Social and Engineering Systems doctoral program at the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS), emphasizes the need for such onboarding in AI tool usage. He points out the lack of tutorials for AI tools, a departure from the norm for most other tools. The researchers aim to address this gap from both methodological and behavioral perspectives.

The potential impact of this onboarding method extends to medical professionals, with the researchers foreseeing its integration into the training of doctors using AI for treatment decisions. Senior author David Sontag, a professor of EECS and leader of the Clinical Machine Learning Group of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), envisions a broader reconsideration of medical education and clinical trial design.

The evolving nature of AI capabilities necessitates a training procedure that adapts over time. Unlike traditional onboarding methods, often limited by human-produced training materials, this system’s onboarding method evolves automatically based on data. The initial step involves collecting data on human-AI collaboration for a specific task, embedding it into a latent space, and using algorithms to identify regions where collaboration is prone to errors.

These regions are then described as rules using natural language, forming the basis for training exercises. Users engage in these exercises, learning when to trust or ignore AI predictions. The researchers conducted tests on two tasks, revealing that their onboarding procedure without recommendations significantly improved accuracy.

While the researchers acknowledge the need for larger studies to assess the short- and long-term effects of onboarding, their current work represents a crucial step toward establishing trust in human-AI collaborations. The innovative method developed by Mozannar and his collaborators not only identifies situations where AI is trustworthy but also effectively communicates them to users, fostering better human-AI interactions.

This pioneering work, funded in part by the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, holds promise for guiding the integration of AI systems into various domains while ensuring safe and informed usage.
